The diner is a true American institution.  The roots of the diner can be traced to Walter Scott, who started selling food from a horse-drawn wagon in 1872 in Rhode Island.  Diners enjoyed decades of popularity, but eventually started to lose some of their popularity with the rise of fast food establishments.  However, a resurgence of diner culture started in the late 1970’s and is still alive and well to this day at Gunther Toody’s.

Diners have always been known for comfort foods such burgers, milkshakes and fried chicken.  Desserts such as malts, pies and cheesecake are diner staples.  Breakfast is king at diners and you’re bound to see a selection of pancakes, waffles, and omelets offered on any diner menu.  Diners are also known for local and regional specialties.  In Maine you’ll likely find fried clams on the menu at the local diner.  At Gunther Toody’s you’ll find huevos rancheros as well as burgers and fries smothered with homemade green chile.
