You have probably noticed that cupcakes have been enjoying the spotlight for about a decade now.  Wall Street has been saying for a few years that the gourmet cupcake trend is officially over, but most people would probably disagree with them as there are still a lot of popular cupcake shops enjoying a successful business.  So go ahead and celebrate America’s favorite little personal cake this Saturday with National Chocolate Cupcake Day.

Cupcakes, while trendy now, have been around for a very long time.  The first mention of individual cakes can be traced to the cookbook American Cookery in 1796.  A note in one recipe read, “a cake to be baked in small cups.”  In 1828 the term cupcake was first used in the Receipts Cookbook.

Before modern muffin pans were available small cakes were usually baked in pottery cups or ramekins, earning them the name cup cakes or cupcakes.  It wasn’t until May 11, 1919 that Hostess first released their now iconic chocolate CupCake, which was the first commercially produced individual snack cake of its kind.

Today you can find cupcakes just about anywhere, from the gas station to fine dining restaurants.  They’re loved by adults and children alike and have become firmly planted in American food culture.  This Saturday celebrate National Chocolate Cupcake Day with one of your very own!
